Steamboat's a-comin' for a Mississippi paddlewheel cruise

Save on Mississippi paddlewheel cruise

History, music, culture and the charms of the largest river steamboat ever built in America.

These are all combined on the American Queen, which Avalon Waterways is now offering a special sale on its March 21 sailing.  Starting in Music City - Nashville - and ending up in The Big Easy – New Orleans - the 12 day holiday promises to be a relaxing tour to some of America’s most famous destinations.

The tour starts with a two night stay in at the legendary Opryland Hotel in Nashville and reserved seats at the Grand Old Opry before travelling by coach to Memphis where there’s an overnight stay including a visit to Sun Studios, where Elvis Presley’s career was launched.

Next you’ll set sail from Memphis for a seven night cruise, with iconic ports of call such as Helena, Vicksburg, Natchez, St. Francisville and Baton Rouge  before you dock in New Orleans for an overnight stay and farewell dinner.

Sightseeing at each stop offers an opportunity to experience the region’s local flair and ranges from a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to a visit to Houmas House, a glorious antebellum estate in the middle of Sugar Cane Country.  In Natchez, Avalon guests are invited to tour Twin Oaks – the 1830’s home of the American Queen’s culinary director and cookbook author, Regina Charboneau, who will show true southern hospitality by way of offering savory creations.  This is exclusive to the Avalon guests on board and sure to be a highlight of the holiday.

Rich with American history, diverse culture and southern charm, this elegant steamboat sails along the fourth largest river in the world, offering a standard of luxury and comfort  that Avalon guests have learned to expect on its popular European river cruises.  On board lectures by a historian will provide genuine insights into Southern culture, while the atmosphere of this authentic paddlewheel steamer will invoke times past.  Built in 1995, the American  Queen comprises six decks enhanced with antiques and woodwork and a two deck Grand Saloon.

The March 21 departure, which includes all meals, wine and beer with dinner, lectures, shore excursions and nightly dancing to big band and swing music, is priced at Cdn $3,812 per person double for an outside stateroom when you book prior to February 12 -  a 20 per cent saving off the regular price.
