Food, glorious food at sea!

Out to Sea for Dec. 19/15

Ah, yes the all-inclusive cruise vacation buffet – morning, noon, night and “midnight.”
Those lavish all-you-can eat buffets at sea are included in the price of admission, with some of them open 24 hours a day, along with room service, pizza joints and late-night “snacks.”
“Most people think of a deluxe buffet when they think of cruise dining and, while that is one option, there are plenty of additional dining delights available on a cruise ship,” said Cindy D’Aoust of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).
The Pinnacle restaurant is a fine-dining option at an additional charge on Holland America ships where the legendary Le Cirque restaurant is recreated on one night each voyage. (Barbara Fox photo)
“Today’s cruises offer specialty dining options that invite guests for once-in-a-lifetime palate experiences,” she added.
The terms epicurean experiences, haute cuisine and culinary delights can now be applied to cruise ship experiences.
Cruise travellers know to expect the unexpected when it comes to cuisine, so pick your ship options carefully to fit your palate.
The trend is for cruise lines to offer numerous options to satisfy any appetite and please any palate.
This ranges from specialty menus to made-to-order dishes, with a wide range of dining options that might surprise even the most seasoned traveller.

TAHOE CITY, CA – Small ship cruise expert AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) in the spirit of 2016’s National Park Centennial Celebration offers the most unique way to experience our National Parks: cruise a park.

Cunard Line history: Launch of the Lazy Lizzy

This article, written by Michael Gallagher, public relations executive and historian
for Cunard Line, is part of an ongoing series of key moments in Cunard Line's history

Cunard Line’s “Q4” at the John Brown & Co Shipyard on the Clyde River
before her launch on 20 September 1967.

Preparations for the launch of the new Cunarder at the John Brown & Co shipyard on the Clyde – known as “Q4” by Cunard Line and “736” by the shipyard – had been going on for some weeks before the big day of 20 September 1967.

It was planned that the new liner would glide toward the river at 22 miles an hour with the last shore fetters, the massive drag links, running out in a thunderous roar. There were ten bundles of them on each side of the ship. Each weighed 70 tons – 1,400 tons in all to steady the liner’s slide into the river and on to the sea.

The ship was expected to be gliding at 19 miles per hour as she hit the water, pushing away 20,000 tons of water – her own launching weight. About 150 men would be aboard the empty shell ready for any emergency, and 161 men would work ashore to ensure a smooth launch.

Sitting in the cockpit, children can pilot the super-cool spaceship through hyperspace and trigger lightspeed jumps to different locations around the galaxy.
In Millennium Falcon, children can express their creativity through Star Wars-themed crafts, games and activities. They can also watch episodes from the new Disney XD animated series, “Star Wars Rebels,” on a large screen or virtually join the rebellion at gaming stations featuring the series’ action-packed adventures.
The excitement continues during a shipboard version of the popular Jedi Training experience that invites young Jedi hopefuls to learn lightsaber moves from a Jedi Master.

Also in the Oceaneer Club, a high-tech interactive space based on the Disney Infinity video game offers more fun for kids.
In the Disney Infinity area, children can experience a whole new way of playing together with exciting virtual experiences and immersive activities. Customized, on-screen adventures bring to life characters and stories from across The Walt Disney Company.
The complete set of Disney Infinity character figures is on display for creative inspiration and available for gameplay. Kids visiting this special room – found only on the Disney Dream – can also unlock exclusive Disney Cruise Line content that they can continue to enjoy when playing Disney Infinity at home.
Special activities bring the virtual gameplay experience to life in the real world. For example, a life-sized Disney Infinity Base sets the stage where children take the place of character figures for a group gaming experience unlike any other. Lighting up in response to gameplay on a large screen, this interactive floor allows kids to be immersed in the Toy Box.
Specialty Sweet Shop for Families

A newly themed area in Disney’s Oceaneer Club, open to ages three to 12, delights children with an out-of-this-galaxy experience inspired by the Star Wars saga.
Kids are transported to a far away galaxy at Star Wars: Millennium Falcon, a Force-filled play area inspired by the spacecraft from the legendary saga.
